Cynthia Justlin for Lost in Romance

1) Why Romance? Did you choose this genre or were you ‘chosen’ by it?

I’ve always been a bit of a sappy romantic who craves happy endings, but I am also very much inspired by good triumphing over evil. I think that’s why I was drawn to romantic suspense in particular. It’s the best of both worlds. I get to write about danger and thwarting nefarious villains while also writing about two people falling in love.

2) Is there a romance author, living or dead, who inspires you particularly?

I wouldn’t say there is one author who has been an inspiration. I’m inspired by a good story, no matter the genre, as well as emotional writing that tugs at my heart. If I can give both of those to readers, then I have done my job as an author.

3) Please, tell us about your last book and, if you can, about your future projects.

INTRUSION, my most recent release, is a fun, action-packed romantic suspense featuring a feisty scientist heroine and a quirky security specialist hero. When Audra McCain is framed for the theft of her dynamic armor prototype, she must team up with Cameron Scott, former special forces turned security specialist, whose talent lies in hacking through the toughest of defenses. To recover the armor, they’ll have to break rules, violate security and fight their growing attraction. But when love makes an unauthorized attack, Cam realizes he may have finally found the one firewall he can’t breach: Audra’s heart.

And coming up in May from Carina Press, EDGE OF LIGHT, a dark romantic thriller which features a CIA agent hero and a forensic anthropologist heroine stuck in captivity. EDGE OF LIGHT is set against a Cambodian backdrop.

4) How was your writing journey? Was it difficult to find an agent and get published?

I wrote a couple of contemporary romances before I realized that I had a natural talent for romantic suspense. Once I started writing romantic suspense, I saw editors and agents responding better to my writing and I knew I was on the right track. But publishing isn’t an easy career to break into. It takes talent and perseverance and even a little bit of luck. Eventually I found myself in the right place and the right time with the right story and sold it to Carina Press.

5) What’s your opinion about this Ebook revolution? Would you consider the indie route?

I love the changes in the publishing industry that are taking place right now. This ebook revolution is making it possible for authors to get their work in front of readers and build an audience without the backing of a traditional publisher. I decided to go the indie route with The Remnants, my military romantic suspense series, because the traditional market made it very difficult for new romantic suspense authors to compete with already established authors. I believed in these books, and knew readers would enjoy them too. I don’t regret my decision one bit. I have loved every minute of my journey as an indie author and will continue to indie publish. That said, I still believe in a combination of both indie and traditional publishing.

6) Nowadays many publishers expect their authors to use Social media a lot to promote their books. Many authors, on the other hand, would prefer to write only, without being distracted by digital trivialities: what are your thoughts?

I admit that my social media skills are not as good as they should be! I’m very introverted and find it hard to know how to interact on places like Twitter, Facebook, and even my own blog. I would love to just bury myself in the next book and let someone else handle promotion on my behalf. However, social media is becoming more and more the norm and I don’t think authors can just ignore it. My advice is to pick one platform that you like doing and learn how to use it to your best advantage rather than trying to do all of them.

Info about the author:

Cynthia is a former Romance Writers of America Golden Heart® Finalist in Romantic Suspense. She started out writing contemporary romance, but when all her plots began to turn dastardly, she decided to stop fighting the urge to throw explosions, dead bodies, and evil villains into her books.

With her B.S. in the chemical sciences and her love of the periodic table (yes, she’s a geek and proud of it!) she finally found the perfect potent mix of love and danger to infuse into her high octane romantic suspense stories.
